Marlae Stevens, who relocated to Lenoir a year ago, is a devoted mother to her four-year-old daughter. She and her family love spending time outdoors and creating memories through both big and small adventures. She enjoys writing, art, and thrifting.

Whether you’re looking to create lasting family memories or simply enjoy a quiet moment of reflection, T.H. Broyhill Walking Park in Lenoir invites you to explore its scenic grounds and discover a peaceful haven steeped in natural beauty.

A Multifaceted Park Experience

Since moving to Lenoir about a year ago, T.H. Broyhill Walking Park has become a cherished spot for my family to enjoy quality outdoor time. Nestled behind the Lenoir Golf Club, this hidden gem that covers 20 acres welcomes visitors of all walks of life, offering space for personalized experiences.

As a mother of a toddler, our visits often involve more exploration than walking. Our favorite spot is a small, hidden pond along the path, which leads to the stunning botanical gardens. From there, we slip through an opening in the woods to a rocky stream, where we’ve:

  • Searched for salamanders
  • Built fairy houses out of sticks and leaves
  • Dipped our feet in the cool, running water
  • Gone rock hunting with our nature-loving little girl

Beyond exploration, T.H. Broyhill Walking Park is a photographer’s dream, with breathtaking views throughout the seasons. My mother-in-law has captured some stunning shots, especially in spring, when the botanical gardens burst into color.

Of course, the park’s most beloved attraction is its nearly 0.5-mile paved walking path, which encircles a large, tranquil pond. Whether you’re out for a peaceful stroll or looking to get your steps in for the day, this scenic route offers a relaxing experience. Plus, it’s dog-friendly, making it a great outing for pet owners!

Where Nature Thrives

One of the most admirable aspects of T.H. Broyhill Walking Park is its commitment to preserving nature. Thoughtful rules help maintain the beauty and health of the park:

  • No fishing ensures the pond remains pristine and the fish can thrive undisturbed.
  • No feeding of ducks or fish prevents harm to the wildlife and keeps the grounds clean.

These protective measures make the park a family-friendly nature sanctuary, where visitors can observe majestic ducks, vibrant fish, and even giant snapping turtles swimming just beneath the surface.

A Place to Slow Down and Enjoy the Moment

In a world that often feels fast-paced and overwhelming, T.H. Broyhill Walking Park offers a much-needed chance to slow down and appreciate the simple joys of nature. Whether you’re:

  • Breathing in fresh air on a peaceful walk
  • Watching wildlife by the pond
  • Making lasting memories with loved ones

…the park provides a refreshing escape from everyday routines. However you choose to spend your time here, one thing is certain—T.H. Broyhill Walking Park is where nature, community, and relaxation come together in perfect harmony.

Hi, I’m Emily — the creator behind Nothing to Do WNC.

My family and I moved to Western North Carolina in 2021 from the coast, drawn here by the mountains, the slower pace, and the feeling that this was a place meant to be lived in — not just passed through. We now call a six-acre patch of land home between Lenoir, Morganton, and Hickory, where we’re slowly building a life surrounded by gardens, animals, and a deep appreciation for the seasons.

Nothing to Do WNC began as a way to explore our new home, but it’s grown into something more: a love letter to Western North Carolina and the everyday beauty of life here.

This is a place to celebrate backroads and small towns, gardens and trails, local food and community gatherings — the simple, meaningful things that make this region feel like home. My hope is to help both locals and visitors fall in love with where they live (or where they’re visiting), and to see Western North Carolina not just as a destination, but as a way of life.
