Hurricane Helene has come and gone, leaving a trail of destruction across Western North Carolina. Although the storm has passed, its aftermath continues to affect communities throughout the region, and will continue to do so for weeks, months, even years in some areas. Now, as the waters recede and the cleanup begins, there are numerous ways you can offer support to those affected.
The Aftermath of Hurricane Helene
Western North Carolina, known for its mountain landscapes and rivers, was especially vulnerable to the intense rains brought by Hurricane Helene. The French Broad and Catawba Rivers, among others, overflowed their banks, flooding homes and businesses, and leaving many families displaced. Downed trees blocked roadways, and power lines were damaged, leading to outages that affected thousands. We’re currently writing this from our favorite local coffee shop as, while we are safe, still facing no power and can do little with our phone’s other than text.
Local schools and businesses closed as emergency crews worked tirelessly to rescue stranded residents, clear debris, and restore essential services. Now, as the community begins the long road to recovery, the focus has shifted from immediate relief efforts to rebuilding and supporting those in need.
How You Can Help
Here are a few ways you can contribute to relief and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene:
1. Donate to Local Relief Organizations
Several local charities and organizations are working on the front lines to assist families affected by the hurricane. Consider donating to these groups, which are providing essentials like food, water, and shelter:
- Western North Carolina Red Cross: Providing disaster relief, shelters, and supplies to families in need.
- United Way of North Carolina: Supporting long-term recovery efforts and providing financial assistance to storm victims.
2. Volunteer Your Time
If you’re able to safely travel and lend a hand, many organizations are seeking volunteers to help with clean-up efforts, debris removal, and distribution of supplies. Local governments and volunteer groups are coordinating efforts to assist affected communities.
3. Donate Supplies
Many families have lost homes or personal belongings in the flooding, and donations of specific items can make a huge difference. Local shelters and food banks are asking for supplies like:
- Non-perishable food items
- Bottled water
- Cleaning supplies (bleach, disinfectant, mops, etc.)
- Blankets, pillows, and clothing (many organizations are stating that they are good now on clothing, but make sure to consult with your local organizations)
4. Support Local Businesses
Many small businesses in the area have been hit hard by the storm. Supporting these businesses through online purchases, gift cards, or patronizing their services when they reopen can help them stay afloat during these difficult times. Local chambers of commerce are often a great resource for finding out which businesses are struggling and how you can assist.
5. Spread the Word
Even if you’re not in a position to donate or volunteer, simply spreading awareness can be helpful. Share updates from official relief organizations on social media, promote local fundraisers, and encourage your network to get involved in supporting the community.
Looking Ahead
Hurricane Helene has left a significant impact on our region, but Western North Carolina is no stranger to adversity. As we come together to rebuild, the strength of our community is on full display. Whether through donations, volunteer work, or simply showing kindness to a neighbor in need, every effort counts.
Together, we will rebuild stronger than ever.
