November Arts & Culture Guide: Workshops, Shows & Holiday Crafts

Posted on November 3, 2025January 17, 2026 by Emily

There’s something about the first real chill of November that sharpens the senses. The air is crisp, the streets quieter, and inside studios, theaters, and galleries, artists are busy kindling new ideas against the cold. This month, art and culture offer the perfect excuse to step out from under your blanket and into the glow of creative energy happening all around.

One of the best things about living here is the abundance of opportunities to engage with art — whether you’re in the mood to simply sit back and take it all in or roll up your sleeves and create something yourself.

Here are some of our favorite things happening this month. Please note – these are just a few of the amazing things. Feel free to comment with what your favorite venue, artist, or art gallery, is hosting!

Hands-On Experiences: Workshops, Art Classes & Community Events

  • On November 8th, head to Rock Barn Country Club & Spa for the 4th Annual Holiday Art & Gift Show & Charity Benefit, supporting the Backpack Program of Catawba County, which provides weekend meals to local children in need. Discover 45+ curated artists and makers showcasing fine art, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and one-of-a-kind holiday gifts—then bid on original pieces that go to support kids in our area.
  • Also on November 8th is the OLLE Jolly Christmas Collab, which joins artists and shop owners together for a unique, local holiday experience on Old Lenoir Road in Hickory.
  • NoCo ARTS in Newton always has something great going on, and this month is no exception. Their offerings this month range from creating felt ornaments to learning how to work with cold wax and oil in painting. Don’t forget, their TRANSCEND exhibition ends on November 15th, with a special Conversation with the Artists Q + A on November 15th, from 6pm – 7pm.
  • The Foothills Cinema Club starts this month and meetings every Sunday evening at 6 PM at 117 N. Main St., in Lenoir. Every month, they will screen four films that fall under a specific theme (this month is RESISTENCE) with a discussion to follow.
  • The Hickory Museum of Art is hosting a series of artist talks this month (Fridays from 2-3) at their satellite location in Valley Hills Mall. Inside Look invites you to connect with local artists as they share the stories behind their work, their creative process, and what inspires them to create.
  • West Union Arts Studios in Morganton has several holiday themed workshops happening this month showing you how to make your own ceramic holiday ornaments or holiday tree lanterns to light up these dark days.

For Observers: Plays, Live Music & Performing Arts

  • Foothills Performing Arts | October 30th-November 15th | William Shakespeare’s Hamlet – Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s best-known and most mysterious plays. At its core, it’s a revenge story: Prince Hamlet sets out to avenge his father’s murder at the hands of his uncle Claudius, who now rules Denmark as king. But what keeps audiences hooked are the play’s many questions and uncertainties, making it a rich exploration of doubt, loyalty, and the nature of truth. Fog of Elsinore brings a nautical and sometimes spooky theme to the show we know and love.
  • J.E. Broyhill Civic Center | November 8th | Gentlemen’s Quartet – GQ (Gentlemen’s Quartet) is a modern, elegant take on some of the most famous music ever written, fusing together multiple genres in a perfect symphony of sophistication, virtuosity, and humor.
  • CoMMA | November 13th-15th | TRASH – A play by James Caverly and Andrew Morrill. Tim and Jake may be Deaf roommates sharing an apartment in the city, but they are polar opposites – each with very different worldviews on what it means to be Deaf in a hearing world. When it comes to taking out the trash, they take a comical an insightful dive into their trash and their perceptions of each other’s lives.
  • Greenroom Community Theatre | November 14th-30th | Shrek: The Musical – Join Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and all your favorite fairytale misfits in this hilarious and heartwarming musical adventure. Featuring songs like “I’m a Believer,” “Freak Flag,” and “Who I’d Be,” this show brings the beloved film to life on stage.
  • Western Piedmont Symphony | November 22nd | Masterworks: Italian Inspirations – A musical journey inspired by classical, romantic Italy, featuring works by Bach, Pärt, Sammartini, Haydn, and Mendelssohn.

As the year winds gently toward winter, these crisp November days invite us out of our cozy routines and into the light of shared creativity. Whether you’re sipping coffee and listening to an artist talk, strolling under street lights during a downtown gathering, picking up a paintbrush or simply watching something beautiful unfold, this region’s artist-driven energy is alive and accessible.

From the galleries of Hickory to the downtowns of Lenoir and Morganton, there’s a thread of invitation—to engage, observe, make, and connect. Wrap a warm scarf around your neck, step into one of these moments, and let the creative sparks of our foothills community carry you through the chill with warmth, inspiration and good company.

Hi, I’m Emily — the creator behind Nothing to Do WNC.

My family and I moved to Western North Carolina in 2021 from the coast, drawn here by the mountains, the slower pace, and the feeling that this was a place meant to be lived in — not just passed through. We now call a six-acre patch of land home between Lenoir, Morganton, and Hickory, where we’re slowly building a life surrounded by gardens, animals, and a deep appreciation for the seasons.

Nothing to Do WNC began as a way to explore our new home, but it’s grown into something more: a love letter to Western North Carolina and the everyday beauty of life here.

This is a place to celebrate backroads and small towns, gardens and trails, local food and community gatherings — the simple, meaningful things that make this region feel like home. My hope is to help both locals and visitors fall in love with where they live (or where they’re visiting), and to see Western North Carolina not just as a destination, but as a way of life.
