Nestled in the rugged beauty of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge foothills, South Mountains State Park offers a serene escape into nature. Spanning over 20,000 acres, this park boasts cascading waterfalls, challenging trails, and tranquil campsites, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
Our family was overjoyed to learn that parts of South Mountains State Park have recently reopened. The aftermath of Hurricane Helene left a visible mark—downed trees, washed-out trails, and a changed landscape—but the resilience of nature and the efforts of park staff have brought new life to this cherished place.

🚶♀️ Embracing New Paths
One of the most missed parts of the park remains closed: the High Shoals Falls Loop. That breathtaking waterfall trail was one of the first places we explored after moving to the area years ago. It’s the kind of spot that leaves an impression—powerful water cascading down 80 feet into a rock-lined pool, mist catching in the sunlight, and the sound of rushing water echoing through the forest. For now, it remains off-limits as crews work hard to repair it safely.

But that didn’t stop us from making the most of our visit. This time, we set off on the Big Bear Trail, which led us to a quieter but still delightful waterfall. Though not as grand as High Shoals, it had its own charm—mossy rocks, rushing water, and a sense of peaceful seclusion. And while the water was icy cold, that didn’t stop kids and adults alike from wading in, splashing, and making memories.
The trail itself wasn’t long, around .2 miles, but there were areas that would be considered difficult to walk if you were someone with limited mobility.

🏕️ Camping Amidst Nature’s Resilience
The park’s tent, trailer, and RV campground has reopened, offering a chance to immerse oneself in the rejuvenated surroundings. Backpack campsites are also accessible, though some hike-in distances have changed due to trail reroutes:
- Fox Trail Campsites: Now 6.8 miles (previously 4.9 miles)
- Jacob Branch Campsites: Now 6.6 miles (previously 3.8 miles)
- Little River Campsites: Accessible
- Murray Branch Campsites: Now 7 miles (previously 5.1 miles)
Please note that Shinny Creek and Upper Falls backpack campsites remain closed as of this post.
